Traditional singer, flute player, tunesmith and songwriter Nuala Kennedy grew up playing music in Dundalk, Ireland and later moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. She has never stinted in her reach on previous recordings, and this collaboration yields yet another adventurous collection.
Vocals feature strongly, shared by Kennedy, Dubliner John Doyle (a veteran of the American/Irish trad scene and groups such as Solas) and Eamon O’Leary, who has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, performing and recording with many of Irish music’s great players. The trio’s name references WB Yeats, and their album is fuelled by intriguing choices.
“Lovely Nancy” is a lyrically fresh and harmonically rich reading of a tale of unrequited love, and the plaintive Scots Gaelic Cha Tig Mòr Mo Bhean Dhachaigh focuses on Kennedy’s pristine vocals.
Her flute playing beautifully anchors the jig, “The Geese In The Bog.” It is Irish and Scottish music of unique beauty, unhurried and balanced. With guitar, bouzouki, mandola and whistles, The Alt distils influences from far and near, all with magnificent ease. The Alt Website
